This is a great post. I can resonate with what you said about feeling like you were always being watched in Japan, especially in restaurants. If I go out to eat with my English students, they always comment on the things I order (or what I don't order). And they still like to comment on how I hold my chopsticks, no matter how many times they've seen me use them! I think it will never end. It's a funny country, that's for sure, but an intriguing one! I love your blog.

Ha! Grits are ground corn, basically a hot cereal, and they're very similar to polenta but they're usually white, not yellow. (You can get yellow grits, however.) They aren't sweet at all, and they're great with cheese, salt pepper and butter, ground pork sausage, you name it. They are generally a breakfast food, but I eat them twice a day sometimes. (And I love breakfast for supper.)

A lot of people in the U.S. say you either like grits or you like cream of wheat - grits are a Southern food, cream of wheat is MOSTLY a Northern food - and you either like them or you don't. (And I hate cream of wheat. Ew.)

I like my grits fairly soupy ... sometimes people like them thicker ... it's a personal preference. Polenta isn't my cup of tea - I'd rather have cornbread than mush, but you get the gist.

I don't know if it's true, but I've been told that the Native Americans introduced the settlers to corn, which, being a corn product that isn't so far fetched.

Come on down and try some!
